A Trip to The Opera

To keep things fresh CBC Daybreak Arts reporter Jeanette Kelly and I swapped our beats. I went to the opera and she went to a Habs game. The experiment led to some revealing interviews. Post game at the Habs Jeanette got 6”7 defenceman Hal Gill talking about playing barbies with his young daughters. And in my feature interview with world class opera soprano Hiromi Omura she told be about how deep down she loves cooking cleaning and everything about homemaking.

Before ‘Swap The Beat’ I had never dreamed of covering arts or going to an opera. But the experience was an eyeopener and I have to admit, it was a lot of fun too.

Former NHL Enforcer Speaks to Elementary School

It isn’t the message that some teachers at the English Montreal School Board wanted Gord Donnelly to pass on to students but the retired NHL enforcer says he still supports fighting in hockey.

Donnelly was asked to speak at Willingdon Elementary school in Montreal’s N.D.G district as part of a long running program by the school board that invites famous and successful graduates go back to the schools to speak.

While Donnelly didn’t seek out a platform to promote fighting, during his Q & A with the students he honestly answered about his career as an enforcer in the NHL. And after his talk he explained to me how he felt about discussing the issue of fighting in game today.

”At the elementary school level of course I don’t want to say too much and encourage them to do things to hurt other classmates in the school yard or anything like that but if I do speak to junior hockey players and the ones that are trying to make a living at this game then for sure I’ll encourage them. I mean I’m not going to tell them not to because it is part of the game still and hopefully it stays.” – Gord Donnelly

Habs Trade Michael Cammalleri

Brier Champ Aims To Reclaim Royal Victoria Jubilee

Don Aitken won the ’77 Brier. Now, 34 years later at the Quebec Provincial Club Championships, he has a chance to reclaim a trophy he hasn’t won in decades. I sat down with Sue Smith on CBC Homerun to talk about Aitken and some changes to Quebec’s curling scene.

McGill Names Clint Uttley Its New Head Football Coach

After finishing last season as McGill’s interim-head coach, Clint Uttley has been given the job as the 20th coach in the Redmen’s 103 year history.

I had a chance to interview this morning during the sportscast on CBC Daybreak Montreal.

I asked him how he is going to break McGill out of a losing streak which spans more than two full season. And if it’s even possible for programs like McGill to ever compete with programs such as Laval.

Sun Youth Hornets Look to Add New Teammates Through Touch Football Tournament

More than 100 day camp kids between 9 and 12 will play in Sun Youth‘s 4th annual touch football tournament.

The goal is to get kids active and recruit new players for the tackle football season.

William & Kate Visit Montreal

The Battle to Ban Teens from Tanning Salons

The hum of a tanning bed might sound like a typical desktop fan.

But the machine has nothing to do with cooling your body down.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The hum is the sound the machine makes as it cooks your skin and gives you a tan.

Dermatologists say the process is far more dangerous than just being out in the sun.

As some provinces take steps to limit how teens can use those tanning beds… a plea from the Canadian Cancer Society falls on deaf ears in Quebec.

Some tanning salons claim there are benefits to tanning. For example….

- ‘getting a base’ before going somewhere hot so you don’t get a bad burn after one day in the sun – The Dermatologists Association dismissed that claim as ‘myth’.

- ‘Tanning is a good way to get vitamin D” – The Dermatologists Association and The Canadian Cancer Society say this is true but the level you receive from the beds is insignificant compared to a daily supplement pill or simply going outside.

- “Tanning beds are safe if used properly and not abused” – Health Canada responds by simply saying that ‘there is no safe way to tan’

Montreal Canadiens First Playoff Game at Home Could Break the Bruins

Montreal Canadiens are taking on the Boston Bruins in game three of the Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight.

Bruins need a win to avoid going down 3 games to 0.

The Habs are looking to keep the momentum rolling.
